Emotion Regulation Skills for Adolescents with Eating Disorders
Calgary Silver Linings Foundation offers an emotion regulation skills group for adolescents with eating disorders. This 10-week skills group for adolescents (14 to 17 years of age) will focus on learning and building healthy emotion regulation skills. To promote generalization of emotion regulation strategies at home, caregivers will attend Session #3, #6, and #9 with their adolescent.
Emotion regulation is a person’s ability to successfully manage and respond to an emotional experience. Throughout the day, people automatically use emotion regulation strategies to cope with overwhelming situations. However, some of these strategies are healthy, and some are not. It takes time and practice to learn how to manage these overwhelming thoughts and emotions with healthy strategies.
This group will help participants to:
• learn how to be mindful of their emotions, understand when overwhelming negative emotions happen, and describe their emotions
• understand how to decrease unwanted emotions
• learn and practice healthy emotion regulation skills
• explore how emotion regulation can affect eating disorder behaviours
• gain a deeper understanding of the importance of emotion regulation strategies in Recovery
This group does not differentiate between the different types of eating disorders because it is our goal to focus on the underlying emotional issues that are common to all eating disorders.
Eligibility for the group:
To participate in the group, adolescents must be actively involved with a treatment team for their eating disorder and be medically stable. Adolescents must also not be suicidal. Both caregiver and adolescent must consent to participating in the group.
Group members will learn specific skills related to emotion regulation but it is not therapy and is not a substitute for treatment. Silver Linings Foundation operates a support group for those struggling with eating disorders.
This support group is not therapy and is not substitute for treatment.
